Tobacco Farmer Payments Down by 40 Per Cent

The value of farmer's leaf tobacco sales in Malawi so far this year, at $242 million, is down by 40 per cent on that of sales during the comparable period of 2010, according to a TMA-relayed story by Gawo Sande for the Nyasa Times quoting Tobacco Control Commission figures. The sales season began on March 14. During the whole of last year's sales season, tobacco earnings in Malawi fell by five per cent to about $410 million as volume sales dropped by almost seven per cent. And during the whole of the 2009 sales season, the value of Malawi's tobacco sales dropped by nine per cent to $433 million as auction prices fell by nearly a quarter. Enditem
