Growers Salvage More Flue-Cured Post-Irene

US flue-cured growers hit by Hurricane Irene have been able to salvage more tobacco than was previously thought, according to a story by Christopher Bickers in the Tobacco Farmer Newsletter. Quoting figures from the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the US Department of Agriculture, Bickers said that production was currently estimated at 383 million pounds, down by 15 per cent on last year's harvest but up by one per cent on September's forecast. Burley production is forecast at 173.0 million pounds, fire-cured production is expected to reach 52.4 million pounds, dark air-cured is put at 15.6 million pounds, and cigar types are forecast at 7.7 million pounds.
