Serbia's Tobacco Deficit Down

Leaf tobacco and tobacco products accounted for 2.2 per cent of the value of Serbia's exports of agricultural and food products during the first half of this year, according to a Tanjug Daily News story quoting the Serbian Chamber of Commerce. At the same time, imports of leaf tobacco and tobacco products accounted for 7.5 per cent of its imports of agricultural and food products. Serbia exported leaf tobacco mainly to Belgium, Germany, Italy and Russia, and imported leaf from Brazil, Italy, Malawi, India, Germany, Turkey, the US, and China. Serbia exported cigarettes to the former Yugoslav republics and Greece, and imported them from Croatia, Macedonia, Russia, Germany, Turkey, Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In all, Serbia's foreign trade in leaf tobacco and tobacco products totaled US$70.6 million during the first half of this year, up 13 per cent from that of the corresponding period of 2010. With exports valued at US$26.7 million and imports valued at US$43.9 million, Serbia had a trade deficit of US$17.2 million in leaf and tobacco products; a deficit that was down by 8 per cent from that of a year ago. Of the exports, leaf tobacco accounted for 55 per cent, while cigarettes and other tobacco products accounted for 43 per cent and 2 per cent respectively. Enditem
