Tobacco-Producing Region Extends Coverage of System of Comprehensive Service Cooperatives Source from: TobaccoChina Online 08/22/2011 Southwest China's Chongqing City - one of the leading tobacco-producing regions in China - is taking steps to significantly extend coverage of the system of comprehensive service cooperatives for tobacco production, in efforts to raise the efficiency of tobacco production in the region.
On August 15, Chongqing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration held an on-the-spot meeting on the development of a modern tobacco agriculture in the region, unveiling a plan to significantly extend coverage of the system of comprehensive service cooperatives to all parts of Chongqing City by the year 2015.
Speaking at the meeting, a leader from Chongqing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration, which doubles as the local tobacco company, said that the 13 units of the exclusive high-quality leaf tobacco production bases in Chongqing already boast 10 comprehensive service cooperatives, which have under them 172 professional service teams covering the processes of tobacco seedlings development, tractor ploughing, crop protection, leaf tobacco curing and leaf tobacco grading. Each of the units produces about 50,000 dan (2,500 tons) of leaf tobacco annually.
When all the exclusive high-quality leaf tobacco production bases in Chongqing City are covered by the system of comprehensive service cooperatives for tobacco production by 2015, the number of workers employed for tobacco production on each mu (0.067 hectare) of tobacco field will have been limited to 20 or less, with the work efficiency to rise by 100 percent or even higher.
