Pakistani Growers Go to Court Over Low Prices

A coalition of tobacco growers' associations in Pakistan filed a writ against the Pakistan Tobacco Board (PTB) in the Peshawar High Court on Monday, alleging that it had allowed tobacco companies to offer illegally low prices for the 2011 crop, despite a huge increase in leaf production costs. Ismail Jan Khan, provincial general secretary of Anjuman-i-Kashtkaran, who filed the petition on behalf of the groups including the Kisan Board, Kashtkaran Tobacco and Ittehad Kashtkaran, said the PTB violated the law by allowing tobacco companies to purchase leaf at the 2010 rates.
