Over-production or No Production; That is The Question Source from: Tobacco Reporter 01/01/2011 The Tobacco Board of India, which intends to increase the penalties it levies on unauthorized tobacco production next season, is considering imposing higher penalties on unregistered tobacco growers than on registered growers, according to a story in the latest issue of the BBM Bommidala Group newsletter.
At present, the penalties are the same for registered and unregistered growers.
The board has long struggled with the issue of over-production but this initiative comes at an interesting time.
As was reported here on June 9, some growers in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh have launched a signature campaign to press for the announcement by the board of a tobacco crop holiday throughout the country.
The growers are concerned at the poor prices being offered by buyers at the Andhra auctions, which are now in progress. Enditem
