Tobacco Growers Want Prices Linked to Costs

Farmers from the Guntur and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh want the costs of production in all tobacco growing areas to be established officially so that benchmark leaf prices can be set at the auction platforms, according to a story in the latest issue of the BBM Bommidala Group's newsletter. The Tobacco Farmers' Associations' Joint Action Committee is asking the Tobacco Board of India to set up a committee to determine the costs of production. It wants the Board to set up a price stabilization fund also. And it wants the government to consider allowing foreign direct investment in cigarette manufacturing. Enditem
