Uganda: Kanungu RDC Cautions Tobacco Farmers

Tobacco farmers in Kanungu have been cautioned against doing business with companies that have not been registered with the district authorities. According to the Resident District Commissioner, Mr Ben Rullonga, farmers risk losing out if the companies continue operating illegally. "Over the past two weeks we have learnt that some individuals posing as representatives of a company has been visiting various villages talking to farmers, introducing themselves as sponsors for tobacco production. However, this company posing as Continental Tobacco Limited has not cleared with us," Mr Rullonga told Daily Monitor on Tuesday. According to Mr Rullonga, only BAT Uganda has formalised its operations in North Kigezi area and has been working with the farmers amicably for over 30 years. 'Following procedure' Mr Rullonga said it is a matter of procedure for any company or individuals operating in the district to first formally introduce themselves to the authorities before they start active business in the district.
