STMA Holds Quality Leaf Tobacco Development, Production Technology Research Symposium Source from: TobaccoChina Online 04/18/2011 The State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) - the regulator of China's tobacco industry - held in southwest China's tobacco-producing Guizhou Province on April 12 a national-level symposium on the development of high-quality leaf tobacco with unique local characteristics and on the research and development of leaf tobacco production technologies for the tobacco industry.
Officials attending the meeting held in the provincial capital city of Guiyang disclosed that in the 2011-2015 five-year period, Guizhou Province will, in accordance with the general guideline of "shift of methods, reform of the structure, attachment of importance to quality, promotion to a higher level and strengthening of development", take steps to promote leaf tobacco production in the province to a higher level on a full scale, with the development of a modern tobacco agriculture in Guizhou as a leading project, with scientific-technological innovation in support, and with the development of high-quality leaf tobacco as a key approach.
Guizhou is one of the leading high-quality leaf tobacco producing regions in China. Over recent years, the unique style and characteristics of leaf tobacco products of Guizhou have turned increasingly remarkable, with both the quality and the market credibility of leaf tobacco products of Guizhou keeping going up steadily.
As a result, key national-level tobacco manufacturers in China have established exclusive high-quality leaf tobacco production bases in Guizhou one after another, and have established firm relations of production, supply and sales with local producers, with in-depth cooperation between the local producers and the buyers in promoting the development of high-quality leaf tobacco with unique local characteristics becoming increasingly obvious.
In the next five years, Guizhou will strive to establish more than 8 million mu (533,333 hectares) of high-standard basic tobacco farmland, and also more than 160 units of specialized bases of a modern tobacco agriculture, and will see its annual leaf tobacco production capacity steadily enlarging to 8.5 million dan (424,500 tons), in basically meeting the targets of realizing the production of leaf tobacco with specialized bases, making all its leaf tobacco products strongly characteristic, and modernizing its means of leaf tobacco production, and in providing a powerful support of raw materials for the development of well-known, competitive brands of "Chinese-style cigarette products".
