Bulgaria Opens Up Leaf Tobacco Market

The Bulgarian parliament has adopted at second reading amendments to the Tobacco and Tobacco Products Act that allow the liberalization of the country's leaf tobacco market, according to a Novinite story. One of the adopted amendments has dropped the requirement that only people authorized to deal with the processing of leaf tobacco may buy the product. Another amendment has cancelled the requirement for the processing of cured tobacco to be carried out only in Bulgaria. The amendments had been proposed by the member of parliament, Ivan Stefanov, who is with the ruling GERB party. He said that at present there were 29 companies registered to buy tobacco. The liberalization of the market, he added, would provide opportunities for other players and prevent the formation of cartels. Enditem
