Japan's Leaf Plantings to Fall by 5.4 Per Cent

Leaf plantings in Japan are set to fall by 5.4 per cent to 14,301 ha next year from those of this year, which themselves were down by four per cent on those of 2009. Flue-cured plantings will fall by 4.7 per cent to 10,341 ha, Burley plantings will fall by 6.9 per cent to 4,342 ha, and plantings of a local type will fall by 7.6 per cent to 118 ha. Japan Tobacco Inc. said today that the Leaf Tobacco Deliberative Council, chaired by Yoshio Kobayashi, had released its determinations for domestic leaf tobacco cultivation and grower prices for 2011 in response to a proposal submitted by JT earlier in the day. The Council was said to have been in general agreement with JT's proposal and determined that next year the domestic tobacco cultivation area would be set at 14,301 ha and that the grower price would be set at an average of ¥1,869.28 per kg for all leaf types, the same price as was set for this year's tobacco.
