Tobacco Growers Take Out Protest

DAVANAGERE: Tobacco growers in Jagalur taluk in Davanagere district took out a protest rally at Jagalur town on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum to the tahasildar demanding support price for the tobacco. KRRS state convener Huchhavvana Halli Majunath said the Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) has been supplying the tobacco seeds to the farmers for the last two years and was purchasing the crop at a cost ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 100 per kg from the growers. But now, it has slashed the price to Rs 10 per kg, causing a great loss to the growers. Besides, over 50 tonnes of tobacco crop has been left unsold in the taluk as the ITC was not coming forward to buy it, he added. Enditem
