Subsidies Survive Budget Revision

Bulgaria's revised state budget, approved last week, includes the provision of BGN116 million in subsidies for tobacco producers, according to a Novinite story. This, the first mid-year budget update in Bulgaria since 1997, was said to have been made necessary largely because of low consumer demand and the government's unwillingness to increase taxes. There had been some fears among tobacco growing communities that the subsidies might not survive the budget revision. Enditem
