Growers Petition Against Anti-Tobacco Measures

Tobacco growers from the Ilocos region of the Philippines have lodged a petition calling for the removal of the country's Health Secretary, Esperanza Cabral, along with other Department of Health officials, and appealing for a halt to measures aimed at "killing" the tobacco industry, according to a story by Frank Cimatu published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Attending a tripartite congress in San Fernando City, Luzon, on Monday, the growers issued another petition voicing their opposition to Articles 9 and 10 of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which calls for the regulation of contents of tobacco products and public disclosure of their toxic ingredients. The petitions were addressed to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Enditem
