Alliance Supports Local Communities Source from: Tobacco Reporter 05/28/2010 Alliance One made donations worth Tsh69.83 million during the first three months of this year to community development projects in Tanzania, according to a story in the Daily News.
The money, allocated through its Community Development Projects Committee, supported projects both in tobacco growing areas and other places.
Much of the money, Tsh31 million, went towards the construction of school classrooms and teachers' houses in Kahama, Urambo, Tabora, Ruvuma and Shinyanga.
In all, Tsh15 million went towards providing solar panels, batteries and UPS [uninterruptible power supply] to 18 "primary societies" in Tabora, Urambo, Kahama, Manyoni, Kasulu and Ruvuma. The solar panels were provided to facilitate the use of computers awarded to these 18 primary societies last season for their good performance in tobacco production and quality. The computers will help the primary societies in record keeping, preparation of farmers' payments after tobacco sales and the tracking of loans for tobacco inputs.
Alliance has spent Tsch8 million building dispensaries at Ruvuma, Kahama and Urambo, Tsh4 million renovating a tobacco storage facility at Kahama and Tsh3 million constructing a bridge at Kahama.
In addition, it provided Tsh1.44 million in fees for vocational training for vulnerable children in Morogoro Municipality, Tsh3 million for mosquito nets at the Funga Funga home for the destitute at Morogoro and Tsh2 million for the reconstruction of a dormitory at the Bethlehem children's centre at Ifakara.
Elsewhere, Tsh2 million was used for sports development and Tsh3 million in support of the police at Morogoro. Enditem
