Tobacco Growers Part of Greek Protests Source from: Tobacco Reporter 02/02/2010 Bulgaria's businesses are losing at least €3 million a day because of continuing protests by Greece's farmers, according to a Novinite story.
The news agency reported on Saturday morning that more than 150 tractor-trailers were lined up at the Kulata-Promahon border between Bulgaria and Greece, blocking the crossing point for trucks, though allowing cars and buses to pass.
The Greek farmers are said to be demanding increases in EU tobacco subsidies, tax reductions for cotton and grain growers, preferential prices for fuel used in farming, easier farm loan terms, and the extension of EU subsidies beyond 2013.
On Thursday, Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Minister, Traicho Traikov, announced that Greece had made a commitment to solve the farmers' border blockades. Enditem
