Chinese Province Invests Heavily in Infrastructure Development for Tobacco Production Source from: Tobaccochina Online 11/23/2009 Southwest China's Sichuan Province - one of the major tobacco-producing regions in China - has invested heavily in the construction of infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco production in the province over recent years, with investment in 2009 alone to reach a total of 1.11 billion yuan (160 million U.S. dollars).
Since the start of a campaign to develop infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco production in Sichuan in 2005, Sichuan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration, which doubles as the provincial tobacco company, has annually invested huge sums of funds in actively promoting the construction of infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco production in the province.
So far, Sichuan Province has basically completed the construction of a number of infrastructure facilities started in 2008, including 338 projects of irrigation and farming paths for tobacco plantations that were technically accepted by the provincial tobacco monopoly administration after inspection.
In efforts to promote the construction of infrastructure facilities for tobacco production in Sichuan on a continued basis, and create basic conditions for the development of leaf tobacco production in the province, Sichuan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration in November started full-scale construction of infrastructure facilities for tobacco production across the province for the year 2009, with 470 million yuan (68 million U.S. dollars) in investment in projects of irrigation and farming paths for tobacco plantations, and with 640 million yuan (92 million U.S. dollars) in projects of leaf tobacco curing facilities.
Sichuan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration has instructed the sublevel tobacco companies in all tobacco-growing regions to well plan the construction of unit infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco production in them in a timely manner, work out specific schemes for implementing projects of infrastructure facilities construction, and formulate their plans for the development of infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco production for the 2009-1012 period with high standards and at high levels, in accordance with the requirement of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration for promoting the development of a modern tobacco agriculture in China.
