Tobacco-Growing Prefecture Strives to Build Largest Base for Fine Variety

Dali Prefecture in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province, in light of the increasing demand for the supply of leaf tobacco of its traditional high-quality Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf variety over recent years, is actively taking steps to establish a comprehensive base for exclusively growing Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf at its Midu County, which will be the largest of its kind in China. With a planned area of more than 400 mu (26.67 hectares), the base will be of six major functions, including the functions as an experimental area, as an office building area and as a residential area. It was reported that when its construction is completed, the base will become the largest Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf comprehensive research and development base in China. Dali Prefecture has a long history of growing Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf, with its annual output of Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf always standing at over 400,000 dan (20,000 tons). In particular, Dali Prefecture sold to the State 860,000 dan (43,000 tons) of Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf in 2009, meeting its annual target for growing and selling Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf set by the State. Previously, Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf was grown in only one county in Dali. But so far, the growing of Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf has been extended from Nanjian County to Weishan County. In 2010, the number of counties in Dailu Prefecture growing Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf will have become five, with the annual yield of Red-Flower Big Gold Leaf in the prefecture expected to reach 1 million dan (50,000 tons).
