Zambian Dealer Given One Week to Pay Farmers

The government has given a one-week ultimatum to a Chipata-based tobacco company to pay 17 Zambian tobacco farmers the K28 million owed to them, according to a Times of Zambia story. A farmer representative, Kupinga Phiri, was quoted as saying the farmers had not been paid for tobacco sold to Sims Enterprises five months ago. Chipata District Commissioner, Moses Nyirenda, said the Sims management had agreed it owed the money to the farmers, so he had asked the company's managing director, Ataf Mogra, to ensure the money was paid by Friday next week.
