Zimbabwe Sales Expected to Overshoot Estimate

With 41.4 million kg of flue-cured tobacco sold by Friday, Zimbabwe looked set to pass this season's previous sales estimate of 42 million kg, according to a report in The Herald. Most of the sales are being made under contract, but the auction floors are due to remain open until the end of August. The target for the 2008/09 season was originally 65 million kg, but, for a number of reasons, including shortages of inputs and coal, electricity cuts and the high rate of inflation, production was limited to less than that.
