Key Region Strives to Fulfill Tobacco Export Project

Luoping County in Qujing City - a key region in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province - is striving to fulfill the demonstrative project of annually producing 5,000 mu (333 hectares) of export-oriented high-quality leaf tobacco in all grades, under contract with Alliance One International Inc. Luoping County is one of the five key regions designated by the Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration to fulfill a number of demonstrative projects for producing high-quality leaf tobacco. In efforts to well fulfill the demonstrative project, Luoping County is taking steps to ensure that all leaf tobacco will be produced in a specialized way, that all leaf tobacco will be produced by designated bases, that the development of tobacco seedlings will be fully commercialized, that all tobacco production bases will apply agricultural machinery, that all leaf tobacco production bases will use intensive curing barns for curing leaf tobacco, that all leaf tobacco harvested will be cured with intensive curing barns, that all tobacco crops will be covered by specialized plant protection, that all tobacco production bases will establish non-tobacco materials control systems to realize clean production, that a package of four essential technical measures will be fully implemented, and that farmyard manure fermented in high temperatures will be additionally applied to all tobacco crops, with the quantity applied to each mu (0.067 hectare) not less than 1,500 kilograms. Through the adoption of such measures, Luoping County wishes to produce "naturally aromatic" high-quality leaf tobacco with strong local characteristics capable of meeting the requirement of international markets.
