Filipino Growers Enjoy Second Year of High Prices

Mar 10, 2009-Leaf tobacco prices in the Philippines have reached unprecedented highs for the second successive season, according to a report in The Philippine Star. Andy Reyes, president of the Philippine Association of Tobacco-based Cooperatives, was quoted as saying that top grade Virginia tobacco was selling at P68-P80 per kg, up from P61-68 per kg last year, and that other Virginia grades had posted similar price increases. Reyes said the top grade of Burley was being sold at P67 per kg, which was described as being 'way above the floor price set by the National Tobacco Administration'.
