March Deadline For Canadian Quota Buy-Out Source from: www.tobaccoreporter.com 02/23/2009 Feb 20, 2009-Canadian tobacco growers have been given a month to decide whether to accept a federal quota buyout or to continue producing tobacco, according to a report by Hank Daniszewski for the Sun Media.
About 2,000 people who packed into a closed meeting in Delhi, Ontario, on Wednesday night were told that, under the federal buyout, growers would receive $1.05 for each lb of quota they held, provided they agreed to quit tobacco growing permanently. They have until March 23 to decide.
Growers who choose to go on producing tobacco will have to obtain a provincial licence and will probably grow their crops under contract.
The passing of the quota system, which has been in place since 1957, threatens the existence of the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers' Marketing Board, whose main functions were to supervise the system and auction the crop. Enditem
