Tunisia:Shrinkage of Tobacco Growing in Jandouba

Stability in tobacco prices since 7 years is among the leading causes contributing to the reduction of 40% of area used in the region of Jendouba. Quintal prices are between 70 and 200 dinars depending on the variety of tobacco (there are four in this region). That is why farmers tend to eschew tobacco, despite the fact that this plant is among the few to remain immune to the ravages of wild boar. In 2008, the tobacco harvest in the region Jendouba reached 897 tonnes or 29% of national production, one of the highest rates in the country. Some 2534 farmers cultivate tobacco, an area of 698 ha.
