Tobacco Auctions Open in Kentucky Source from: Tobaccofarmquarterly.com Nov 14, 2008 11/17/2008 Tobacco auctions open in Kentucky The Associated Press and the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that two Kentucky tobacco auctions have opened this week, as the few holdouts of the old marketing system remain. The auction system has been largely eliminated since cigarette companies began to use contracts with their growers.
The Clay Tobacco Warehouse on Mount Sterling opened Thursday, while Farmers Tobacco Warehouse in Danville opened earlier in the week. Another warehouse in Lexington will open later this month. Amounts of tobacco going under the hammer range from 260,000 to just over 300,000 pounds.
Kentucky farmers are expected to produce about 145 million pounds of burley this year, down from 154 million pounds last year. Enditem
