Japan Determines Leaf Planting Area Source from: Tobaccoreporter.com Nov 12, 2008 11/14/2008 Tobacco will be produced in Japan next year on 16,110 ha, 821 ha fewer than were planted during the 2008 season.
In setting the contracted cultivation area earlier today, the Leaf Tobacco Deliberative Council was said to have been in general agreement with a proposal put forward by Japan Tobacco Inc.
The grower price for all types of leaf was set by the Council at ¥1,910.52 per kg, 3.52 per cent higher than the 2008-season price.
Next year, flue-cured will be planted on 11,064 ha, 592 ha fewer than in 2008, while Burley will be grown on 4,910 ha, down 221 ha, and a local leaf type will be grown on 136 ha, down 7 ha.
The Council is an 11-member advisory body comprising domestic tobacco grower representatives and independent experts. Enditem
