Prefecture in Central China Designated as Model High-Quality Leaf Tobacco Production Base

With the approval of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA), Enshi City in central China's Hubei Province – a key tobacco producing region – has been officially designated as a national-level model high-quality leaf tobacco production base applying new production technologies. The designation signifies that Enshi Prefecture has realized relatively great promotion of its overall leaf tobacco production capacity. Many scientific-technological achievements have been made in the establishment of the model high-quality leaf tobacco production base in Enshi over the past four years. In the establishment of the base, priority has been given to the development of a modern tobacco agriculture in Enshi, characterized with the development and production of high-quality and safety leaf tobacco with unique features in a highly efficient and ecological way. Meanwhile, efforts have been made to strengthen selective development of new varieties of burley, selection of tobacco varieties, improvement of regional distribution of tobacco varieties chosen, application of the tobacco seeds infiltration adjustment technology, and research and development of key theories and technology for lowering the cost of floating development of tobacco seedlings, optimization of irrigation, etc, leading to the making of major achievements in scientific-technological research and development as well as demonstrative application of technologies in production. It was reported that in the development of the model high-quality leaf tobacco production base in Enshi over a next period of time, efforts will be made to strengthen its management, further improve its operating mechanisms, promote its full-scale development, and upgrade its technologies for leaf tobacco production, in order that it will be able to play the leading role as a national-level model base.
