Tennessee's Burley Production Looking up; Dark Crop

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service's Tennessee office has reported that the tobacco crops for the Volunteer State are projected to be up significantly. For the September 1 reporting period, the burley production was forecast at 24.7 million pounds, ups 19 percent over last year. Acreage projections are unchanged at 13,000 pounds, but yields are forecast at 1.900 pounds, up nearly 200 pounds from 2007. The burley crop is rated "fair." Dark tobacco's 2008 crop is rated as "excellent," as a late-transplanted crop picked up rain at precisely the right time. Dark fire-cured yield is forecast at 3,200 pounds an acre, and dark air-cured is yielding 2,700 pounds an acre. Both projections are well above the numbers for last year. Enditem
