Tobacco-Producing Region Technically Transform Curing Barns for Energy Conservation

Longyan City in southeast China's Fujian Province - a major tobacco-producing region in China - is using a patent technology to conduct technical transformation of 8,000 of the 45,000 generic leaf tobacco curing barns in the city into intensive curing barns for significant energy conservation. Annually, Longyan City produces 700,000 dan (35,000 tons) of leaf tobacco. In 2007, the tobacco acreage in Longyan City reached 250,000 mu (16,667 hectares). Generic leaf tobacco curing barns waste relatively large quantities of energy, with the heat utilization efficiency reaching only 20 percent. Recently, Changting Golden Bridge Electric Motor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Fujian has succeeded in docking the patent technology of installing the "Leaf Tobacco Curing Barn Rectangular Heat Dissipation, Energy Conservation and Heat Supply Device" with a local enterprise in Longyan, sources with Changting County Development and Reform Commission told reporters on June 10. So far, the two enterprises have successfully completed the operation of pilot projects in two local townships to conduct technical transformation of generic leaf tobacco curing barns in the city into intensive curing barns. The curing barns transformed will be safer, will have a larger leaf tobacco curing capacity, and will be easier to operate. The technical transformation will lead to the reduction of the unit energy consumption for leaf tobacco curing by 42.9 percent and reducing the cost of curing by 26.3 percent, with the quantity of energy to be saved each year expected to equate 18,931 tons of standard coal. In an effort to promote the technical transformation to the whole of Longyan City, Longyan City Tobacco Company and Changting Golden Bridge Electric Motor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. have jointly formulated the Technical Norms governing the Transformation of Generic Leaf Tobacco Curing Barns into Intensive Curing Barns, in preparation for full-scale technical transformation of all leaf tobacco curing barns in Longyan City.
