Malawi Burley Attracts Record Prices

Malawi's tobacco auction season opened with Burley prices hitting a record high that was five times above last year's average price, according to an Agence France-Presse report quoting Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) officials. General manager, Godfrey Chapola, said Burley had fetched up to $11 per kg, against an average last year of $2 per kg. He described the situation as "unbelievable and unheard of". Chapola ascribed the price hike to "a general shortage of tobacco in the world" and stiff competition among buyers. Enditem
