Malawi Burley Attracts Record Prices

Malawi's tobacco auction season opened with Burley prices hitting a record high that was five times above last year's average price, according to an Agence France-Presse report quoting Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) officials. General manager, Godfrey Chapola, said Burley had fetched up to $11 per kg, against an average last year of $2 per kg. He described the situation as "unbelievable and unheard of".
