GM Burley has Half the Nitrosamines

Researchers at N.C. State University (NCSU) have reported that genetically modifying Burley can lower the levels of carcinogens in cured tobacco by as much as six-fold, according to a report in the News & Observer. The scientists said in a press note that the results of their research, which is sponsored by Philip Morris USA, could lead to tobacco products - especially smokeless products - containing fewer cancer-causing agents. The genetic modification was said to have brought about a 50 per cent overall reduction in the class of compounds called tobacco-specific nitrosamines. The research results have been published online in Plant Biotechnology Journal. Enditem
