Regional Government Meets on Promoting Sustainable Development of Tobacco Production

The government of Yuxi City - a key region of southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province - held the 2008 annual leaf tobacco work conference on January 9 to work out specific plans for promoting sustainable development of leaf tobacco production in the region in 2008, in accordance with the Scientific Outlook on Development put forward by the central government. In summarizing leaf tobacco production in Yuxi over the past five years, the meeting pointed out that in the five-year period, Yuxi City has always put top priority to stabilizing and increasing the annual leaf tobacco output of the city, has earnestly implemented the relevant policies of the State on leaf tobacco production, has strengthened efforts to support the development of leaf tobacco production in the region, and has prompted competent administrative authorities to strengthen the provision of high-quality service for leaf tobacco production, redressing the downward trend of leaf tobacco production in the region following the adoption of the policy of harsher control over the production of both leaf tobacco and cigarettes by the State in 1998, enabling leaf tobacco production in Yuxi to get out of a low ebb and develop steadily, enabling the quality of leaf tobacco, taxation on the leaf tobacco trade and income of tobacco growers in Yuxi to reach record highs, and making outstanding contribution to the sound and rapid development of the local economy. The meeting also pointed out that though leaf tobacco production in Yuxi has reached a record high level in history, it is still in a period of reform, in which opportunities and challenges coexist. Presently, it is imperative to strengthen the leaf tobacco production capacity of Yuxi, intensify efforts to promote the development of competitive leaf tobacco brands of Yuxi and take practical steps to promote sustainable development of leaf tobacco production in Yuxi, according to the meeting.
