Zimbabwe Aims for 120 Million kg

The Tobacco Industry and Marketing board expects Zimbabwe's 7,000 small-scale farmers to plant 12,000 hectares of tobacco during the upcoming growing season, reports The Herald. A target of 120 million kg has already been set for this year's tobacco crop. To date, 495 kg of tobacco seed-an all-time record-has been sold, according to TIMB figures. If the seed is planted at the correct sowing rate of an average 6.5 gram per hectare it would cover over 75,000 hectares, which is sufficient to yield the set target. Zimbabwean tobacco producers have been plagued by hyperinflation, shortages of fuel and other inputs. Enditem
