Zimbabwe's Seed Sales Right on Ttarget

Zimbabwe is on course to harvest its target of 120 million kg of flue-cured tobacco during the 2007/08 production season, according to a report in The Herald quoting the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board chairman, Njodzi Machirori. Speaking at a lunch to mark the end of the 2006/07 tobacco selling season, Machirori said that 495 kg of tobacco seed had been sold to date. This was enough to produce seedlings for a planted area of 75,000 ha, which was enough to meet the targeted harvest. However, this assumes that all of the seeds are transplanted successfully, that all of the farmers' needs are met and that climatic conditions are favorable. The Agriculture Minister, Rugare Gumbo, told the lunch audience that the target production was within sight and that his ministry was doing everything in its power to ensure that it was achieved.
