Zimbabwe Promotes More Environmentally-Friendly Tobacco Growing

Zimbabwe's Tobacco Research Board has trained 6,790 farmers to grow tobacco using the more environmentally-friendly floating tray system and aimed to train 710 more this year, New Ziana reported on Tuesday. The floating tray system protects the environment and the present method is being phased out for using methyl bromide, said the report. Zimbabwe, which has signed the Montreal Protocol seeking to eliminate the use of ozone-depleting substances, aims to phase out 50 tons of methyl bromide this year and stop its use by 2015, said the report. Tobacco is one of the main foreign currency earners in Southern Africa. Enditem
