Tobacco Makes Its Way To The Barn Source from: The Greeneville Sun Photo by Phil Gentry 08/25/2006 Greene Countians know this scene well: tobacco hanging in a barn late in the summer. The photo above is of a barn in the 7100 block of the 107 Cutoff. An Aug. 1 survey of Tennessee farmers conducted by the state field office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service indicates scenes like this one are perhaps dwindling. As of Aug. 1, the survey said, burley production is forecast at 29.4 million pounds, 14 percent below a year ago. "This will likely plummet production to the lowest since 1927," a report on the survey said. Acreage for harvest is expected to amount to 14,000 acres, down 3,000 from 2005, the survey said. Enditem
