Kentucky Has First Reported Case of Blue Mold Tobacco Fungus Source from: wkyt.com 05/29/2006 SALYERSVILLE, Ky. Farmers and agriculture extension agents are paying attention to an eastern Kentucky county where a threat to tobacco crops has been sighted.
Kentucky apparently has the first reported case in the country this year of the blue mold tobacco fungus.
The case was reported in Magoffin County.
The fungus was reported last year in Hardin County and destroyed part of a tobacco crop. Its the second year in a row that Kentucky has reported blue mold before any other state.
University of Kentucky tobacco pathologist Kenny Seebold says he's puzzled by the sighting, because Magoffin County doesn't have many tobacco crops.
He also says blue mold should show up first in states farther south.
The U-K College of Agriculture issued a blue mold warning on Wednesday. Enditem
