Polish Police Swoop on Illegal Cigarette Factories

Police said they seized more than six million cigarettes in the swoops, carried out over the last several days. One the factories was near Gniezno, central-western Poland, where nine people were detained, including two citizens of Macedonia.

The other was in Rozalin, near Warsaw, where five people, including two citizens of Ukraine, were detained.

Meanwhile, at a warehouse in Łódź, central Poland, officers say they detained nine men and seized 46 tons of tobacco.

Police say the production of illegal cigarettes is popular with Polish gangs. The cost of producing one pack of such cigarettes is around PLN 0.80 (EUR 0.18, USD 0.20).

The same pack can be sold in Poland for an average of PLN 6, and in Western Europe for around EUR 5. Enditem
