Northern Ireland Spends Most on Food and Tobacco

Northern Ireland's fondness for food, tobacco, chocolate and fizzy drinks has been revealed in the Living Costs and Food Survey released by the Office for National Statistics.

It shows that NI households spent more on food and non-alcoholic drink than anywhere else in the UK - £64 a week.

They also spent more a week on tobacco - £7.50 - than the UK average (£4.50).

NI also spent the second highest amount on alcohol and tobacco at £14.90, with Scotland the highest on £15.60.

The UK weekly average for alcohol and tobacco was £12.30.

The average weekly household expenditure in Northern Ireland combined over 2012 to 2014 was £484.10 a week compared to the UK figure of £512.60.

Northern Ireland households spent more on chocolate per week (£2.10) than the rest of the UK and were the second highest for soft drinks at £2.50.

The survey shows Northern Ireland spends the highest amount on clothing and footwear at £35.90 per week.

However, the survey says it spends the least per week on housing, fuel and power at £56.10 per week. Enditem
