UK: AirGuard Smoke Detector Can Tell If Your ''igarette'' Has Weed in It - And Will Grass on You If It Does Source from: The Mirror(uk) 11/06/2014 ![]() AirGuard is a sophisticated smoke detector that can differentiate between the smoke created by regular cigarettes and that created by spliffs. That's right, the alarm can tell if you're smoking marijuana and - depending on where it's been installed - it can also alert the authorities. There are two versions of the smoke detector - one that just plugs into a power outlet in the wall and another 'wearable'version that can be held in the palm of the hand - and is likely to appeal to overbearing parents across the land. AirGuard has been developed by a company called FreshAir Sensors which was founded on the research of a chemistry professor from Dartmouth University, called Joe DelBruno. AirGuard features a pair of polymer films that can tell if someone is smoking tobacco or cannabis. When smoke is detected, the device will send a Wi-Fi alert to a central system, which can then forward that information to an administrator. The target market for AirGuard is initially hotels, where people often try to smoke in non-smoking rooms. "There are concerns about people smoking in hotel rooms and there is also a surprising amount of interest from places like public housing, condo associations, dorms, nursing homes, and jails," said FreshAir CEO Jack O'Toole. "Our device will allow users to monitor unobserved areas and ensure these spaces are not being smoked in. It sends a signal over Wi-Fi that immediately alerts facility managers to someone smoking in a prohibited area." AirGuard is due for release in spring 2015. Enditem |
