Japan: August Tobacco Sales down 7.8%

Cigarette sales in Japan in August fell 7.8 percent from a year before, down for the fifth straight month, an industry group said Friday.

Sales totaled 15.7 billion cigarettes, according to the Tobacco Institute of Japan.

The decline reflected a fall in the number of days for delivery to retail stores as the month had one more Sunday than in August last year, industry people said.

At industry leader Japan Tobacco Inc., sales dropped 9.4 percent to 9.4 billion cigarettes reflecting new products releases by rival companies. Enditem
