China: US Professor Visits Chinese Research Institute on Exchange, Cooperation

Professor Robert E. Maleczka Jr., director of the Department of Chemistry of Michigan State University of the United States, recently visited Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute in central China's Henan Province for academic exchange and discussions on promoting cooperation between the two sides.

During the visit, Professor Maleczka delivered an academic report under the theme of manufacturer-academia cooperation in promoting research on boron catalytic alkylation reaction, making detailed introduction of crucial issues including the catalytic system, catalytic mechanisms, etc of the reaction, and demonstrating the value of application of the system of the reaction in the field of green synthesis of natural products, medicine and flavor compounds.

In conducting academic exchange, Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute and Professor Maleczka held in-depth discussions on cooperative research between the two sides in future.

The two sides are planning to launch the topic of research and development of pyrazine and thiazole class tobacco flavors, in striving to realize diversity-oriented synthesis of important raw materials of pyrazine and thiazole class tobacco flavors.

Professor Maleczka is mainly engaged in research on green chemical synthesis and application of organic boron reagents, new methods based on organotin and organosilicon reagents, etc. In 2008, Professor Maleczka won a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award granted by the U.S. government.
