Denmark Tobacco Market Hit by Declining Smoking Prevalence in the Country Source from: TransWorldNews 11/21/2013 All tobacco categories except smokeless tobacco continued to show slow volume sales decline. Cigarettes remained the largest category within tobacco in 2012 in volume terms. Smoking prevalence in Denmark continues to decline. This is the result of the effective measures taken by the Danish government. These measures include a ban on smoking in public places, annual increases in excise duty, the introduction of graphic health warnings on cigarette packs and the launch of various campaigns highlighting the dangers of smoking. Furthermore, the Danish government is keen to prevent children from seeing smoking as a trendy fashion and developing the smoking habit. These restrictions led to volume sales declines in most tobacco categories. Tighter EU laws, rising health awareness and decline in smoking prevalence force manufacturers to focus on new product development. The recent trend of leading brands developing menthol versions of cigarettes that are perceived as being lighter and less harmful is on the rise. Companies are constantly looking for new filter technologies that would reduce the amount of toxicants in cigarette smoke. Manufacturers are also investing research and development and investigating substitute products. Enditem |
