<strong>China: Meeting Held to Promote Large-scale Irrigation Project for Tobacco Production</strong>

The bureau in charge of management over the construction of a large-scale project of irrigation for tobacco production in Xuanwei City of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, known as Project Jirong, held a meeting on February 26 to plan the work of construction over a next period of time, and to promote construction as scheduled.

The dignitaries attending the meeting included Deng Xiaogang, deputy general manager of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Corporation; Zhu Xingyou, member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Qujing City Committee and vice mayor of Qujing City; Wu Lizhu, Communist Party Committee secretary, director and general manager of Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration; Zong Jiaquan and Zhuang Zhaoze, director and deputy director of the Basic Work Office of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Corporation; and Xie Yingguai, secretary of the Communist Party Disciplinary Inspection Commission and Trade Union chairman of Qujing City Tobacco Company.

In an address delivered at the meeting, Wu Lizhu emphasized that the construction of Project Jirong, also known as Project Happiness Canal of Qujing, will be of great significance to solving hard technical problems in production and daily life faced by local tobacco growers. He urged all departments of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Corporation to do a good job of managing the construction of the project with a high sense of responsibility.

At the meeting, leaders of the bureau in charge of management over the construction of Project Jirong introduced progress in the construction of the project, problems in the construction of the project, and corresponding working measures for a next period of time. Representatives from the relevant designing institutes made speeches on two node techniques applied in the construction of the project. Xie Yingguai read out guiding opinions of provincial-level water conservancy experts on the construction of the project. Leaders in charge of the work of construction of the project of the governments of Xuanwei City and Qilin District of Xuanwei City respectively made speeches to specify their positions on the construction of the project.

Also attending the meeting were leaders in charge of the work of construction of the project of the governments of Xuanwei City and Qilin District of Xuanwei City; managers, leaders specifically in charge and directors of the basic work offices of tobacco subcompanies, relevant personnel from Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Corporation, Qujing City Tobacco Company; leaders of the bureau in charge of management over the construction of Project Jirong; and relevant personnel from the supervisory and designing institutes concerned.
