UK: Regulator Begins Jersey Tobacco Sale Study

The way tobacco products are sold in Jersey is to be the subject of a study.

Regulator CICRA announced the move following a request from the States' Economic Development Department.

Andrew Riseley, chief executive of the regulatory body, said the study would look at the pricing of tobacco products as well as profit generated from them.

He said: "CICRA will undertake the study... and will make recommendations as to how the operation of the market could be improved."

Senator Alan Maclean, the minister for economic development, requested the review following public concern over the difference between the added tax on tobacco in Jersey and the UK.

CICRA will examine importation and wholesale, as well as looking at the States of Jersey's Tobacco Strategy.

It said it hoped to complete the study by May 2013. Enditem
