Cuba Adds Small Montecristo Size

Habanos S.A., Cuba's cigar monopoly, has announced the release of a new size in its iconic Montecristo brand, the Media Corona. The 3 1/2 inches by 44 ring gauge cigar is aimed at smokers who want a full-bodied flavor profile but in a shorter length so it can be smoked quickly.

The Montecristo Media Corona comes in the brand's standard yellow and red boxes of 25 cigars. Habanos says the cigar copies the traditional taste of the classic Montecristo line, a medium- to full-bodied smoke, and carries a reddish-brown, or colorado, wrapper. According to Habanos, all the tobaccos are sourced from the Vuelta Abajo, Cuba's prime growing region. The cigar will also carry the new Montecristo band, which has a gold-embossed fleur-de-lis in the center.

Ajay Patel, who owns a Casa de Habano in London, says the cigar is great-looking, and he expects demand to be high for the short, but full-flavored smoke. "The depth of flavor is just fantastic for a short Monte," says Patel. He is selling the cigars for £10.80, or around $16.75.

The U.K. market was one of the first to receive the cigars, but a Habanos spokesperson says the cigars will be available around the world in the coming weeks. Enditem
