Davidoff of Geneva Revitalizing Winston Churchill Line

Sir Winston Churchill has returned—to Davidoff that is. The sleepy Davidoff cigar brand that many smokers have forgotten about is being reblended, repackaged and reimagined. A select few will get a sneak preview of the revitalized brand on December 8 in New York City. The rest of the market will have to wait until February 2015 for the official commercial launch. Unlike the original, this updated version will be rebranded as a Davidoff product and will carry the name Davidoff Winston Churchill.

The Winston Churchill line was introduced in December 2007, created in conjunction with Winston Spencer-Churchill, grandson of the famous, cigar-smoking prime minister. It was the first non-Davidoff cigar to be rolled in the Davidoff factory proper—Zino and Avo brand cigars, while produced under the same watchful eye of Hendrik Kelner, are rolled at OK Cigars, a separate factory located in an adjacent building. Spencer-Churchill himself (who died in 2010) even made an appearance at the IPCPR trade show in 2008 as part of Davidoff's promotional push for the new brand.

The four-size line scored an average of 86 points on a vertical brand tasting that appeared in the January 22, 2008 issue of Cigar Insider.

Though Winston Churchill cigars started to fade in popularity, especially in lieu of Davidoff's other cigar projects and campaigns, Davidoff did not give up on the line. The company ceased production of the old blend and has been allowing old retail stock to run out. Now, rollers are concentrating on the new blend, which is a mélange of Nicaraguan, Mexican, Dominican and Ecuadoran tobaccos.

Davidoff Winston Churchill is set to debut in four sizes: Churchill (of course), Toro, Robusto and Petit Corona.
